Current and retired members of participating unions, their spouses, and dependent children
One year of continuous union membership by the applicant, spouse, or parent (if applicant is a dependent) by May 31, 2023
Members from the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Canada eligible
Awards must be used for the 2023-2024 school year
Open to undergraduate and graduate students
Eligible purposes for the Union Plus Scholarship:

- Study Abroad
- Language Study
- Community or Public Service
- Dissertation Support
Requirements For Union Plus Scholarship 2023
Information and requirements include:
1.One letter of reference from a teacher or other adult familiar with your achievements and abilities.
2.Two essays, each approximately 350 words:
a. Essay 1: Choose one of the following questions:
– Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
-Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?
b. Essay 2: Describe your relationship with the union and the labor movement.
Explain how it has personally affected your life and your family’s life.
- National or international union name
- Local union number
- Local union’s address and phone number
- Name of the local union President or Business Manager
- Provide this information for your union, your spouse’s union, or your parent’s union (if you are a dependent). If affiliated with multiple unions, list the information for all.
Remember to include the necessary details and accurately complete the application according to the specific guidelines provided by the Union Plus Scholarship program.
Cover Period And Renewability
Issued in June 2024
Must be accepted into an:
- Accredited college,
- Community college,
- Recognized technical/trade school at the time of award issuance
Awards announced by mail in the first week of June
Non-responsive recipients contacted by phone
Applicants to be notified by email when the award list is posted
Applicable for any year of study, from freshman to graduate school (including law and medical school)
Application deadline is by 11:59 p.m. (midnight, ET) on Thursday, January 31, 2024
