Samvid Scholarship

The Samvid Scholarship designs a prestigious postgraduate scholarship for inspired individuals dedicated to making a difference.

Established in 2021 by Samvid Ventures, the Samvid Scholars program aims to invest in the educational journey of future leaders who are passionate about creating positive transformations in society.

This plan aims to empower scholars, enabling them to unlock their full potential and continue their journey as catalysts for change.

Samvid Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

  • Eligible candidates must enroll in a full-time graduate program in the United States for a minimum of 2 years.
  • The following programs are eligible: MD, MBA, JD, MPP/MPA, MPH, and MS/MA in the social sciences or STEM.
  • Candidates must be first-year graduate students during the 2023-2024 academic year.
  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.5 is required.
  • Candidates must be either U.S. citizens or DACA recipients.
  • To remain eligible for the second year of the scholarship, candidates must maintain good academic standing.
  • Competitive candidates will demonstrate a strong commitment to driving positive societal change.
  • Past experiences and future goals should reflect a dedication to effecting meaningful transformations.

Application Criteria

Find a faculty member who is willing to guide you through the application process.

Inform Dr. Francisco Miranda, the Samvid Scholarship Advisor, of your intention to apply by contacting him at fmiranda2@alaska.edu or 907-786-4035.

Gather important documents, including;

  • your resume/CV,
  • transcripts from all the universities you attended,
  • scores for any standardized tests required by your chosen graduate program.

If none of the universities you applied to required standardized test scores, you can skip this requirement.

Start writing your three mandatory short essays.

These essays should describe;

  • your leadership experience,
  • explain your motivations for pursuing graduate study
  • how it will contribute to your career,
  • detail how you have demonstrated your commitment to making a positive impact on society
  • how you plan to continue this commitment in the future.

There is also an optional fourth essay prompt where you can discuss the unique perspective you will bring to the Samvid Scholar community.

You need two letters of recommendation.

Choose individuals who can provide;

  • detailed insights into your academic excellence,
  • leadership abilities,
  • personal qualities,
  • resilience in the face of challenges,
  • dedication to service
  • addressing significant social issues.

Recommenders can include faculty members, mentors, supervisors, and others.

The Samvid Scholars Selection Committee will review the submitted applications and select candidates for interviews.

Interviews usually take place shortly after the application deadline, typically in April or early May.

Samvid Scholarship Award

  • The award provides up to $50,000 per year for two years to cover tuition fees. Scholars participate in a two-year leadership development program.
  • Scholars can attend an annual retreat to meet and interact with other scholars, join panels and workshops.
  • Small group sessions are held to encourage closer connections and support among scholars.
  • Scholars work on a service project with local leaders and interdisciplinary teams to address real and complex social issues.
  • Virtual events are organized for additional learning and networking opportunities.
  • Scholars have access to a strong alumni community for ongoing networking and mentorship.
  • In-person events are arranged to further enhance networking opportunities within the alumni community.
