In 2021, Brunson created, executive produced, co-wrote, and starred in Abbott Elementary, a mockumentary-style sitcom about an underfunded Philadelphia public school.

The show premiered to positive reviews and ratings, and Brunson became the first Black woman to be nominated three times in the comedy category at the Primetime Emmy Awards.

She also won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.
