James Edmund Caan was born on March 26, 1940, in The Bronx, New York City.
His parents, Sophie and Arthur Caan, were Jewish immigrants from Germany.
Growing up in Sunnyside, Queens, Caan’s father worked as a kosher meat dealer.
Tragically, Caan’s sister Barbara Emily Caan passed away from leukemia at the age of 38 in 1981.

Caan received his education in New York City before attending Michigan State University (MSU).
While at MSU, he was a member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity.
Caan initially aspired to play football but was unable to make the team.
He later transferred to Hofstra University in New York but did not complete his degree.

In 1963, Caan had a minor role in the film “Irma la Douce.”
